‘World class’ gallery vision takes a step forward in central London
Plans have been developed by RIBA award-winning architectural and design practice, BuckleyGrayYeoman for a pioneering new gallery hub in the heart of London’s world famous museum district.
If approved, the scheme will create London’s greatest year-round concentration of commercial art exhibitions in a cluster of up to 30 galleries operating in five listed buildings opposite South Kensington’s Natural History Museum.
The project is the brainchild of John Martin, co-founder and former fair director of Art Dubai, and Scott Murdoch of CWM property advisors and gallery specialists, in a joint initiative with the owners of the property, South Kensington Estates Tim Butler, Managing Director of South Kensington Estates said: “We are delighted to be bringing forward this world class new project which, if approved, will richly complement South Kensington’s heritage and provide a vital modern facility for London’s art community.”
Scheduled to open in 2018, Cromwell Place’s innovative approach will see a new model created for leading galleries to establish a world-class art market destination in a flexible and cost effective cluster, giving collectors the quality, variety and convenience they need in an accessible atmosphere.
One of the other many benefits Cromwell Place will unlock will be new opportunities for regional museums and art organisations to highlight their collections to London audiences, ensuring the benefits of the project can be felt well beyond South Kensington and London. Meanwhile, fledgling gallerists and curators are also set to benefit through the Incubator Membership Scheme, which would allow up to three new curators or start-up galleries free annual membership to help them establish their business.
Support for the project has come from across the art and design industry with gallerists, potential partners and property experts all backing the plans, along with members of the local community.
Galleries, art consultants, curators and institutions are invited to register their interest at
www.cromwellplace.com ahead of membership details being released in due course.
