Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter has completed a striking new mountaineering centre in Norway

The Norwegian Mountaineering Center is located in Åndalsnes, Møre og Romsdal in Norway.

Designed by Oslo based Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter the building is covered in white, grey and brown shingles. The density of the white shingles increases towards the top of the building giving the impression of snow on a mountain top.

The tall, angular building contains an indoor climbing wall and bouldering room, as well as a lower mono-pitched form that houses changing rooms, a cafe, library and offices.

The architects commented, “It is anchored in an innovative interpretation of nature’s fantastic dimensions and the dramatic experience of mountaineering. The design of the building is based on its function as a mountaineering centre and gathering place for both locals and visitors.

“This provides the structure with a characteristic volume communicating its contents with an exciting and unique geometrical expression. Its outer skin is clad in a uniform surface, highlighting its originality and situation next to the railway tracks of Raumabanen and the station area in the Åndalsnes town centre.”

Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter won a competition to design the 900 sq m building in 2009 and it completed earlier this year.
