US charity Breaking Ground celebrates the opening of a new supportive housing residence in the Bronx

The non-profit organisation Breaking Ground has just celebrated the opening of a new supportive housing residence, Boston Road, in the Bronx, in New York. The building was designed by Alexander Gorlin Architects.

Boston Road has 154 units of housing for formerly homeless New Yorkers, high users of Medicaid, seniors and low-income adults. Since 1990, Breaking Ground has helped 12,000 people escape and avoid homelessness, and high quality architecture and design is key to their approach. They work with world-class architects to create beautiful, healthy spaces. This gives the homeless and other vulnerable New Yorkers pride in their new homes, playing a part in their recovery, and transforming their lives.

Commenting on the project Brenda Rosen said: “The opening of Boston Road will provide 154 low-income and formerly homeless New Yorkers with a safe, comfortable and healthy home, giving them the critical support that they need to get back on their feet,” said Brenda Rosen, President and CEO of Breaking Ground. “Through the use of New York State Medicaid Redesign Team funding and by providing residents with fundamental onsite medical and psychiatric services, Breaking Ground is at the forefront of a model that prioritizes housing as a healthcare solution and lowers public health care costs and saves lives."

Boston Road is unique because it’s one of the first buildings funded by the New York State Medicaid Redesign Team, employing housing as a strategy for reducing health care costs. By providing stable, affordable housing with on-site support, residents will live a better quality of life, and reduce costly emergency room visits. The building has on-site medical services, as well as a landscaped courtyard, fitness room, computer lab, laundry, bicycle storage, green roof and 24-hour security. The building aims to reach Enterprise Green Certification.
