The Buchan Group has completed a landmark office development in Christchurch, New Zealand as rebuilding after the earthquake continues 

Global architectural, interior and graphic design firm The Buchan Group has relocated its new Christchurch office to 144 Kilmore Street, a building it also designed.

Located adjacent to the Northern Frame in central Christchurch, New Zealand, the three-level office block boasts a stunning outlook over the new green belt and Avon River, towards the central city and Port Hills beyond.

Owned by Three One Five Limited and built by Leighs Construction, the building offers 1,500 sq m of fringe, B-grade office space with Buchan Group now occupying 360 sq m on the top level.  Other building tenants include Core Education and Saturn Portfolio.

Before the move, The Buchan Group’s temporary Christchurch office had been at 41 Moorhouse Avenue, after relocating from its Cambridge Terrace office following the February 2011 earthquake.

The Buchan Group Practice Manager Raylene McEwan said the move had not only reinvigorated the practice and provided room for future expansion, but also created the opportunity to design their perfect working space.

“When designing the building and knowing we would eventually be a tenant, we looked at how we could make it more conducive to the collaborative and creative nature of our work, as well as the modern workspace environments that other tenants desired,” she said.

“As a result, the building features easy open-plan floor plates, high ceilings, floor to ceiling glazing on both the north and south facades, generous staff facilities, mechanical and natural ventilation and external balconies, come work and entertaining spaces.

“Our own office takes advantage of high levels of natural light, exposed ceilings to greater increase the ceiling height and simplicity of plan to form break out studio and collaboration spaces.”

Ms McEwan said it was also important for Buchan to establish its new permanent office as part of its commitment to Christchurch’s rebuilding efforts.

“We’ve been heavily involved in many reconstruction, repair and new projects across the city, from the iconic RE:START shopping precinct to Riverside Apartments and The Landing at Wigram Skies, helping residents move forward after the earthquake,” she said.

“Moving our office into the completed 144 Kilmore Street is a significant milestone for Buchan and our staff as we look to a prosperous future in Christchurch.”
