Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat and Shanghai Tower officials unveil signboard confirming building as China’s tallest and World’s second-tallest

An event has taken place in Shanghai that commemorates a milestone in tall building history. The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) joined officials of Shanghai Tower in unveiling the commemorative signboard designating Shanghai Tower as the tallest building in China and the second-tallest building in the world. With a height of 632m, Shanghai Tower is only the third “megatall” building of 600m or higher in the world. Chaired by CTBUH China Office Director Daniel Safarik, the ceremony took place in front of the entrance of Shanghai Tower, with more than 40 invited guests from the tall building industry in attendance.

Brief remarks were made by CTBUH Chairman David Malott, Principal, KPF; and Jianping Gu, General Manager, Shanghai Tower Business Operation & Management Co., Ltd.

“The extraordinary design, engineering and construction effort that went into Shanghai Tower was undertaken, and succeeded in creating an icon and a beautiful sculpture. However, the true legacy of Shanghai Tower will be in the example it has set for showing us new ways of living and working in the vertical cities of the future. In a very exciting way, we can say that we are standing at the point where ‘the future’ is now,” said Malott.

A photo session was held, with representatives of Shanghai Tower, the Architectural Society of China, Gensler, the design architect, and many others taking their turns being photographed with the new signboard.

Attendees included:

  • CTBUH Chairman David Malott, Principal, KPF, China Tall Building Awards Jury
  • CTBUH China Office Director Daniel Safarik
  • Jianping Gu, General Manager, Shanghai Tower Business Operation & Management Co., Ltd.
  • Grace Zhu, Marketing Director, Shanghai Tower Business Operation & Management Co., Ltd.
