Madrid Rio Linear Park has won a prestigious award from Harvard Graduate School of Design
Madrid in Spain is located approximately 350 km from the nearest beach in the region of Valencia. That is why Burgos & Garrido, Porras La Casta, Rubio A-Sala and West 8’s Madrid Rio project, shortlisted for the WAN Awards in 2012, has become so treasured by the city and its inhabitants. A Linear park running along the banks of the River Manzanares, it features an urban beach, a range of bridges, children’s play areas and fountains designed by various architects, and it was recently awarded the XII Veronica Rudge Green Prize in Urban Design.
The award ceremony will be held on 2 February, 2016 at the Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD), Cambridge, USA.
The award, probably the most important one in the world, is granted to urban design projects and honours projects built in the last ten years which stand out for their excellent design and ability to transform cities through carefully planned interventions comprising responsible social strategies that improve public space and the citizens’ quality of life. Jury Chair Professor Rahul Mehrotra will host the award ceremony and open a discussion on the project. During the award ceremony, design team coordinator Ginés Garrido will present Madrid Rio, which integrates both large-scale infrastructures and the urban fabric with their natural surroundings, transforming the riverside area of the city into a more sustainable and habitable public space.
Madrid Rio has had a significant influence not only in the city of Madrid, but also as an urban planning model. Moreover, an exhibition on the winning project has been organized at the Harvard Graduate School of Design’s Gund Hall Gallery. It is on view from January 18, and will remain open to the public during three months.
