With a strong focus on sustainability Atkins are creating low energy offices for themselves in Surrey

Design, engineering and project management consultancy Atkins has revealed its design and masterplan for its new office at its historic Woodcote Grove headquarters in Epsom.

The new office concept – designed by Atkins’ architects and project managed by Faithful+Gould – will give around 1,000 multi-disciplinary staff working at Woodcote Grove more modern, efficient and flexible working spaces. The design is also intended to meet the highest sustainability targets, including BREEAM Excellent and EPC A, and to complement the existing grounds and rich heritage of the site.

“Sustainability is at the heart of our design,” said Kaare Nielsen, Atkins’ lead architect for Woodcote Grove. “We want our new offices to be as low energy as possible, reflecting our core company value of sustainability. As such, the orientation of the building addresses solar gains and glares, and gives the best possible results for natural light and ventilation.”

“Ultimately, we want to provide a working environment of positive collaboration for our staff at Woodcote Grove. The new building is intended to encourage more interaction between our multi-disciplinary design, engineering and project management teams.”

Atkins has entered into a Development Agreement with Henry Boot Developments Limited, who will deliver the building through to completion. Construction will start in the summer of 2016, with car park works from January 2016, with the existing facilities on the site remaining in operation throughout construction.

Nick Roberts, Atkins’ UK & Europe CEO, said: “It is almost 60 years since Sir William Atkins established a base in Epsom for his company. During this time we have become a world leader in design, engineering and project management, and delivered infrastructure that has transformed the UK and the world. Our new offices at Woodcote Grove will help our teams collaborate, and encourage the knowledge sharing and inter disciplinary teamwork that make Atkins a world class consultancy and ensure we deliver value to our clients in years to come.”

Over 20 disciplines from across Atkins – including architects, building services, structural engineers, archaeologists and ecologists – have come together on the project. Atkins is also working alongside Faithful+Gould (project managers and cost consultants) and Scott Brownrigg Planning (planning consultants) to develop the concept for the scheme which is due for completion in 2018.
