UNStudio have created a striking mixed-use project in a much-loved area of Brussels
Le Toison d’Or retail and living complex, designed by UNStudio in collaboration with Jaspers-Eyers Architects, is located on the Avenue de la Toison d’Or in Elsene, one of the districts of the Brussels-Capital Region. The Avenue de la Toison d’Or is situated in area of Brussels, better known as the "Vijfhoek", a remnant of the ancient ramparts surrounding the city. The project is located between two historical gates - the Porte Louise and the Port de Namur - between which runs the Avenue de la Toison d’Or. The area enjoys an international feel, characterised by luxury boutiques and the Haussmanniaanse Avenue. Situated at the crossroads of two municipalities, the project forms an important transition point in this area of the city.
An essential element of the design for Le Toison d’Or is the urban context; the connection to the existing buildings and the promotion of the atmosphere of the Ridder - en Lakenweverstraat. In addition, the programme and the sustainable aspects of the project form decisive elements in the design.
The architectural vision is based on an analysis of the individual identities of the buildings in the nearby streets. The strong verticality of the existing facade rhythm was continued in the design for the Le Toison d’Or building. The duality of the programme (retail and apartments) is translated into the façade design by means of V-shaped portals which act as a visual link between the two functions. The V-shaped portals further create diversity and rhythm and the facade, in addition to emphasizing the terrace spaces of the upper apartments. Le Toison d’Or contains apartments of various sizes, commercial space and public and private parking spaces.
