One of WAN's 21 for 21 winners has designed a university in Vietnam that aims to replace any trees that it displaces and more…

Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) in Vietnam has a flat landscape dominated by vertical straight buildings. To engage the city in a different way, FPT University, designed by Vo Trong Nghia Architects, appears as an undulating forested mountain growing out of the city of concrete and brick. This form creates more greenery than it has destroyed and provides the city with a new icon for sustainability.

Currently in progress, the project covers 22,500 m2 with ample green space being dedicated to circulation and gathering. A large courtyard provides space for lectures, events or exchange. From here, a semi-outdoor garden carves through the building and continues onto the roof, covering it with vegetation and creating more opportunity to gather and observe the lush scenery. Additionally, the building facade is covered by trees that cleanse the air and reduce energy consumption by producing shade.

FPT University has been designed towards creating harmony between humans and nature. The building will aid the recovery of greenery that once flourished on this land and foster a new generation of thinkers.

WAN AWARD’s 21 for 21 program was a five year quest to identify the 21 emerging firms who could become the leading lights of architecture in the 21st Century. For a full list of winners click here.
