The Shoolini University Central Library in Solan, India is set to become an architectural icon for the university and the Himachal Pradesh region

Archohm, a multidisciplinary design studio offering design consulting for architecture, has recently completed the impressive concrete central library for the Shoolini University in Solan, India. It overlooks a beautiful green valley in the Himachal Pradesh region of the country set in the foothills of the Himalayan mountain range. Peacefully positioned in the landscape, the striking building reflects the nature of its function as it physically manifests the philosophy of the biotechnology campus that it serves.

Conceptually, this four-floor structure is an intense interconnected volume of voids and solids, that connect the entire building. It starts as a narrow shaded space on the lower two floors. These form the research cells and discussion areas for senior students and members of the faculty. The upper two floors are made deeper as the contours recede and the front remains aligned. This allows for the creation of a large central courtyard that pours uniform indirect light into all the parts of the built floors.

The courtyards connect in voids and volumes, as they broaden up to the terrace to become a natural container of unrestricted light with breathtaking views across the surrounding countryside. The temperature within the building is carefully controlled to create a comfortable atmosphere within the library. The spatial superstructure and the exclusivity of the elevation, elevates the role of the library on the campus and helps to give it an international sensibility.

The Shoolini University central library, with its white palette, bare concrete inserts and vibrant coloured interiors, is set to become an architectural icon for the university and the Himachal Pradesh region as a whole for years to come
