ZGF Architects LLP selected as the winner in the WAN Healthcare Award 2015

We are delighted to announce the first place entry, selected for the 2015 WAN Healthcare Award is the St. Charles Bend Cancer Centre located in Oregon, USA submitted by ZGF Architects LLP – Congratulations!

Judging the entries in this category were Mike Rawlinson, Estates & Building Projects Manager at Spire Healthcare; Jean Mah, Principal and healthcare planner in Perkins+Will’s Health Design Group; Lars Steffensen, Partner at Henning Larsen Architects and Sunand Prasad, Co-founder of Penoyre & Prasad.

The winning entry was selected from the shortlist of six fantastic projects, each presentation showing a completely different healthcare project. But for our jurors, there was one stand-out winner.

Designed as a patient-centric and regionally-focused facility, the new St. Charles Bend Cancer Centre showcases great patient-centred design. It demonstrates key radiation and oncology services in one location and showcases a facility that enhances caregiver productivity and increases patient satisfaction. The design goal was to create a relaxing and peaceful healing environment and to bring a spa-like space to the clinical setting. Open, bright spaces, sweeping views and a meticulously programmed interior combine to create a world-class cancer centre and a true place of healing for the body and soul. When weather permits, patients also have the option of receiving treatment in an outdoor infusion garden where moods can be elevated by sunshine, mountain air, whimsical sculpture and the distant mountain views.

When asking Mike Rawlinson what he thought made this project so effective he said “This brilliantly answers the brief and the requirements for treating cancer patients and has the ability of being replicated in other situations that you could almost pick it up and use it for a cancer patient in the UK, in the USA, anywhere. This has architectural merit and functional merit in answering the brief and I think in terms of saying to the world of architecture and clients, here is innovation to a huge problem we all have in the world of how to treat cancer.” Jean Mah also agreed with Mike and commented “I just love the fact that patients can go outside during their treatment and appreciate the views and the landscape, this is a great project”.

We’d like to take the opportunity to thank not only the jury but all who entered their work into this years’ Healthcare Award 2015. We have seen a fantastic selection of healthcare architecture over the last three years, and can’t wait to see the next selection in 2016.
