Cousins & Cousins team up with Gx Glass to create extra sparkle

Architects Cousins & Cousins have designed a multi-coloured, jewel-like pavilion which will be erected in St John’s Square, London as part of this year’s Clerkenwell Design Week in May. Entitled ‘Glaze’, it has been created in collaboration with Gx Glass – a leading UK manufacturer and supplier of glass to architectural interior designers.

The project celebrates the various applications of glass in construction, interiors, installation art and sculpture. Fully demountable and reusable, the installation is designed to highlight and celebrate the versatility of glass, its colour and the surface designs that make it an important medium through which designers and architects can realise their ideas.

Glaze draws on the heritage of Clerkenwell as a centre of design and manufacture, with buildings such as the former Victorian glassworks at the Farmiloe Building among its notable landmarks.

It offers a journey through a multitude of glass products that vary in size and colour, creating a walk through an entire visual experience. The vibrant panels alternate between opaque and transparent, inspired by Venetian Murano glass.

A lightweight steel frame holds glass of different widths and finishes that draws the visitor towards the centre of the installation. There, they will find a host a variety of talks and workshops throughout the three-day festival, which runs from 19-21 May.

Jelena Cousins, Director of Cousins & Cousins comments: “We wanted to convey the same excitement and interest with the installation as someone would get from looking at a jewel or a Venetian glass sweet. We believe Glaze will spark the imagination of the visitor as to how they could use glass, and make them aware of the variety on offer.”
