Kjellander + Sjöberg and Skanska are among those working to develop a new urban block in Kiruna, Sweden
Kjellander + Sjöberg Architects, one of the leading architectural firms in Scandinavia have won the competition by Kiruna Municipality to complete the Fjällbäcken urban block in the new Kiruna city centre. The proposed project will be designed with its extreme northern latitude and seasonal weather conditions in mind. The main aim will be provide year-round social meeting places for all ages, with an activity and leisure centre, in addition to attractive and sustainable housing.
The stylish, angular block will open on to a central square with a local food market, a café and the entrance to the leisure centre. The first phase of the re-development comprises buildings forming the vibrant new Kiruna Square with the town hall in the centre.
Kristina Zakrisson, Kiruna’s Councillor states: “The goal is to have the new city centre established within the next five years. The work really starts right now.”
Last autumn, Kiruna Municipality announced a land transfer act for 10 town blocks in the heart of the new Kiruna, where the main square and the central high street will be. Ten construction companies showed their interest by submitting their applications for building the new Kiruna.
