Phaidon to publish Brick - a fresh look at the world’s oldest man-made building material.

Phaidon Press announced that a new book by William Hall, Brick will be published in April. Following the success of Concrete (2012), Brick is an insightful look at extraordinary early works of architecture.

The book also features some of the most celebrated architects of the twentieth century, such as Mies van der Rohe, Alvar Aalto and Frank Lloyd Wright. It explores the beauty of brick through 180 structures dating from 3,000 BC to the present day, engaging and encouraging readers to think about the sculptural qualities of buildings.

Arranged to promote comparison and discussion, the selected projects take the reader on a global tour of intriguing and inspiring structures: an American arts centre sits next to an English castle, a French war memorial is shown alongside a Russian cathedral, and a Uruguayan church next to a school in Burkina Faso. Brick takes a different look at the world’s oldest man-made building material, comparing remarkable and beautiful brick building around the world.

Illustrated with extraordinary photographs, each project includes an extended caption providing a commentary on the building. It also includes an introductory essay by art historian and BBC television presenter Dan Cruickshank, offering a personal and engaging response to the topic of brick.

As William Hall himself pointed out, no illustrated books have been published on the subject for over a decade suggesting that, despite its extensive acknowledge, brick architecture is distinctly under appreciated.
