Miami Beach to get world-class convention centre
Fentress Architects have been selected for the Miami Beach Convention Centre upgrade. The new 1.4 million sq ft development will provide upgraded facilities and structures that should increase the marketability of the city, giving Miami Beach one of the most attended convention centres in the United States.
The renovation includes a new 60,000 sq ft ballroom and 127,000 sq ft of new meeting spaces. It will also feature new outdoor meeting areas, such as tropical garden, games lawn, veterans’ plaza, pavilion and water feature.
The facility is designed to achieve a LEED Silver rating from the U.S. Green Building Council. The exterior façade was extensively studied to determine how to best minimize or maximize available daylight.
Michael Winters, director of design and interiors for Fentress, says: “The studio intends to design a convention centre that will give back to the urban and civic environment. Ultimately, we want to create a convention centre that the neighbourhood and the city of Miami Beach will be proud of.”
The new design is inspired by the ocean. The form of waves, manta rays and coral reefs were studied as part of the design process. The structure will also incorporate digital art, providing visual elements that will project the Miami Beach Convention Centre as a high tech showcase.
The new Miami Beach Convention Centre is all about enhancing the visitors’ experience by reviving this significant area and bringing economic activity.
Curtis Fentress, president and principal in charge of design at Fentress Architects says: “Miami Beach is a world-class city and it deserves a world-class convention centre.”
Fentress Architects has designed some of the world’s most advanced convention centres, airports, office buildings, residential towers, museums, courthouses, and government projects.
