Sadovniki Park in Moscow given a revamp by LDA Design with Alphabet City

The reinvigoration of a popular Moscow park, Sadovniki, has completed following four months of complex upgrades and construction work. Independent design, environment and sustainability consultancy, LDA Design, with Alphabet City, was the landscape architect for the 34-hectare project.

LDA Design’s transformation of Sadovniki, ‘The Garden Park’, has created a beautiful modern park in a landscape of gardens, lounging lawns, play meadows and trees. A new park pavilion overlooks garden terraces that lead to a fountain plaza, ice rink, play area and sports pitches. Sadovniki Park was profiled by the Mayor of Moscow as an exemplar in contemporary park design.

A triangular striated geometry provides a distinctive design language that is interpreted in the overall layout, topographic interventions and design detail. Works completed on the park include: new and improved paths, lighting, signage, benches, bins, arbors, bicycle parking, trees and planting and new welcoming entrances.

There are also three modern play areas for children of all ages, areas for sports facilities (a multi-use court, two volleyball courts, a tennis court, table tennis, street workout, and skate park), jogging and biking trails, a dance hall and a playground for dogs. In the centre of the park is a fountain plaza with stepped garden terraces, interactive water jets and the main pavilion, which will soon open as a café. The fountain plaza transforms into an ice rink in the winter.

At the centre of the park is ‘Riga’ garden, which was founded in 2005. The garden was originally designed by Latvian architects and has a regular structure that reflects the characteristics of the Latvian capital city. The garden has been completely restored and now includes new steel arches and canopies with patterns that reflect the Art Deco character of Riga, paving that incorporates Riga Street names and new lighting.

Andrew Harland, Senior Partner at LDA Design, said: “Sadovniki was one of ten parks we redesigned for the Moscow City Government. In our designs, we have placed great emphasis on quality of life, wellbeing, play and recreation, working hard to create opportunities for the community, as well as providing a rich horticultural and ecological experience.”
