COBE designs public conference centre with employee restaurant at adidas Headquarters
A winner has been selected from a shortlist of 30 international teams to design the new 11,000 sq m Meet & Eat facility at the adidas flagship in Herzogenaurach, Germany. Danish architects COBE will collaborate with German COBE Berlin, Knippers Helbig and Transsolar. As part of the completion of the project, COBE will also work with German architects CL Map. The building is due to complete in 2018.
The rhombus-shaped development will blend a public conference centre with an employee restaurant and showroom, as part of the wider adidas Group headquarters, known as World of Sports. Taking the company’s philosophy ‘performance, passion, integrity and diversity’ as a starting point, the team has created a highly flexible space that balances form and function.
Dan Stubbergaard, Founder and Creative Director at COBE, details: “The adidas brand has always been known for technique and functionality, and we have designed a building that reflects and encapsulates these values. adidas Meet & Eat will house many functions, both internal and public, and therefore we have created a design that above all is multifunctional and flexible. A design that allows for the building to change and adjust to the different social contexts that the building will house.”
A connection to the surrounding natural landscape is an integral element of the design, with floor-to-ceiling windows found throughout. The majority of this glass façade can be opened during the warmer months, creating an almost barrier-free volume with easy access to the outside. Small winter gardens can also be found throughout, providing users with areas for informal meetings or relaxing nooks for eating lunch.
Stubbergaard explains: “adidas Meet & Eat merges with the landscape’s existing terrain, creating an open, green and welcoming building that gathers all members of the adidas family - both employees, sports stars and visitors - as well as multiple functions and flows under one single roof. The iconic roof rests like a carpet covering the building, connecting all functions and creating a building flooded with light.”
