Aranguren & Gallegos Arquitectos to design base for ICA Miami in Design District
The Board of Trustees of the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami (ICA Miami) has announced that the museum will build a new, permanent home in the Design District, on land generously donated by Miami Design District Associates - a partnership between Dacra’s Craig Robins and L Real Estate.
Located on NE 41 Street, the new 37,500 sq ft building is being designed by the Spanish firm Aranguren & Gallegos Arquitectos, marking their first U.S. project to date. The design and construction of the new museum, along with the acquisition of additional land for a 15,000 sq ft adjacent sculpture garden, are being funded entirely by a major capital gift from Irma and Norman Braman.
Featuring more than 20,000 sq ft of exhibition galleries, the new building enables ICA Miami to expand its reach and programs, dedicated to promoting the exchange of art and ideas throughout the Miami region and internationally. Final designs for the new museum will be released in early 2015. Groundbreaking is expected to occur in the summer 2015, with a grand opening in December 2016.
“Miami is among the most impassioned and engaged cultural communities in the world. We are thrilled to be able to realise the design and construction of ICA Miami’s new home without the need for any public funding," said Irma Braman, Co-Chair of ICA Miami’s Board of Trustees.
"We are especially thankful to Craig Robins and Miami Design District Associates for enabling us to remain permanently in the Design District, which sits at the crossroads of some of the most dynamic communities in Miami Dade, and to our entire Board of Trustees, whose dedication and fundraising efforts ensure the continued operations and ongoing growth of the institution.
“To create our new home, we have selected Aranguren & Gallegos, a firm noted for designs that respond to, enliven, and enrich dense urban environments. Their vision for our new museum building reflects both Miami’s unique cultural landscape and our mission of presenting the work of the most innovative local and international artists working today.”
