Frank Gehry-designed Dr Chau Chak Wing Building for UTS undergoing final fit-out

Construction is now complete on the Dr Chau Chak Wing Building at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS), designed by Frank Gehry and the team at Gehry Partners. This $150m new-build facility is part of a wider billion-dollar redevelopment scheme at the UTS and focus will now turn to the fit-out so that students can begin to use the building in Semester 1, 2015.

UTS Vice-Chancellor Professor Attila Brungs said: “The Dr Chau Chak Wing Building and other recently completed projects are a physical manifestation of the innovative and creative thinking that underpins UTS’s commitment to creating revolutionary spaces to support our new models of learning. They also allow for the expansion of our world-leading research with real-world impact.”

The building was named after Australian-Chinese businessman and philanthropist Dr Chau Chak Wing, who donated $20m to the development. The design is characteristic of it's internationally-renowned architect, featuring grand architectural gestures across the façade, folding into a striking, memorable exterior. This statement brickwork is punctuated with panes of glass to light the building naturally.

Earlier this year the UTS celebrated the completion of another new addition: the Denton Corker Marshall-designed Faculty of Engineering and IT (FEIT). With its perforated aluminium shell and unusual pattern derived from binary code, the design takes a very different aesthetic to Gehry's however both share a focus on collaborative learning and creating links between teaching and social factors.

"Our story is really not about the building,” Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Education and Students, Professor Shirley Alexander, said of the newly-completed Dr Chau Chak Wing Building. “Our story is about Australia's future."

A tender for the Dr Chau Chak Wing Building was advertised by WAN's Business Information Service in July 2010. See here for the full brief.
