Lambeth Council approves Garden Bridge

The Heatherwick Studio-designed Garden Bridge - due to span the River Thames between Queen’s Walk on the South Bank and Temple Station - has reached another milestone this week as Lambeth Council granted it planning approval. The scheme will now go before Westminster Council with a decision due in December 2014.

Speaking to the Architects’ Journal, Thomas Heatherwick said: “The Garden Bridge will be an extraordinarily special place, either to race across, relax in or look back at the rest of the city’s sights. It is fantastic that the Lambeth [sic] has helped London take one step closer to making it a reality.”

Rising costs - and public contribution - to the scheme, as well as the projected impact of rising crowds to the area as a result of this ambitious new bridge, have taken a slight edge off the initial widespread excitement generated by glossy renderings and colourful depictions of the Garden Bridge. But the project still has a multitude of supporters.

The project has been inspired by actress and campaigner Joanna Lumley, engineered by Arup and landscaped by Dan Pearson. Filled with verdant foliage and mature trees, the 1,214ft-long bridge has been compared to the High Line in New York for its urban green properties.
