Shigeru Ban takes first place in design competition for Tainan Museum of Fine Arts

Shigeru Ban has been revealed as the winner of a design competition for the new Tainan Museum of Fine Arts in Taiwan. The competition was launched by Tainan City Government and published by WAN’s Business Information Service, with a construction budget of NT$1,780m.

At the core of the scheme is the promotion of arts education, a showcase for local arts, tourism, and sustainable design, with the government keen to complete a public art museum of national standards that retains a local cultural flavour.

A minimum project area was set at 26,400 sq m and the brief stipulated the inclusion of: permanent, general, and special exhibition spaces; a collection room with art warehouse, an area to repair artworks, study space, and ancillary spaces; an Art Resource Center for education purposes able to accommodate 150 seats; souvenir shops, bookstores, and restaurants; service spaces; parking facilities; and exterior landscaping.

Renderings of the winning design suggest a development that is open to the elements, sheltered by an overhanging roofscape. Colourful interlocking volumes are stacked atop one another, creating a dynamic presentation to passers-by. Verdant foliage has been incorporated into the plans, both in the external grounds and integrated into the internal spaces.
