Mathematics Gallery at the Science Museum in London to be designed by Zaha Hadid

Zaha Hadid Architects has been selected as the winner of a design competition for the Science Museum in London made possible by a donation of £5m by philanthropists David and Claudia Harding. This is the largest gift ever made to the Science Museum and will fund a mathematics gallery as part of the wider museum masterplan. The ongoing development will transform approximately 1/3 of the museum over the coming five years.

Science Museum Director, Ian Blatchford said: “David and Claudia stand out among philanthropists as dedicated champions of science. We are determined to match their enormous generosity with the ambition we show in harnessing our world-class collections to tell the stories of how mathematicians have helped to shape the world.”

Renderings released by the Science Museum show characteristically fluid designs by Zaha Hadid Architects, with a grand ceiling structure framing the displays and smooth pedestrian channels throughout. Hadid comments: “The design explores the many influences of mathematics in our everyday lives; transforming seemingly abstract mathematical concepts into an exciting interactive experience for visitors of all ages.”

The project - dubbed The David and Claudia Harding Mathematics Gallery - is due to open to the public in 2016 and will be a permanent gallery detailing the lives of mathematicians, their tools and ideas, and how these have created the modern world. This exhibition will be curated by David Rooney.
