'Aggressive deadline' set for expansion of Al Maktoum International Airport at DWC

Dubai Airports has confirmed an immense expansion plan for Al Maktoum International Airport at Dubai World Central (DWC) as part of a forward-thinking plan to cater for the expected increase in passenger numbers in the coming decades.

Split into two phases, the complete project will cover an area of 56 sq km and cater for 200 million passengers every year. Phase I will focus on the construction of two satellite buildings with the ability to accommodate 120m passengers each year and receive 100 A380 aircraft at any one time.

This initial phase is expected to take 6-8 years to complete however Dubai Airports Chief Executive Paul Griffiths told Gulf News: “Unless they break ground by the end of the year we probably won’t achieve the aggressive deadline we’ve set.”

The publication also reported that His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai has viewed a range of architectural proposals for the project. The selection of an architect is yet to be announced.

It is thought that the expanded Al Maktoum International Airport - due to be the largest in the world on completion - will incorporate five parallel 4.5km-long runways capable of handling ‘type F’ aircraft. Spacing will be such that aeroplanes can land and take of simultaneously.

Griffiths concludes: “With limited options for further growth at Dubai International, we are taking that next step to securing our future by building a brand new airport that will not only create the capacity we will need in the coming decades but also provide state of the art facilities that revolutionise the airport experience on an unprecedented scale.”
