Shortlisted designs released for development of Mesa City Center in Arizona

Woods Bagot with Surfacedesign, Inc. is one of three teams shortlisted in a competition to design the new Mesa City Center in Arizona, US. The competition was advertised by WAN’s Business Information Service in September 2013; see here for the full competition brief. A winner will be selected in October 2014.

Entrants were challenged to imagine a ‘signature public space’ for Mesa City as the first step in an ongoing project to reignite the city’s downtown core. The shortlisted design by Woods Bagot & Surfacedesign looks to create a year-round cultural destination for the city, taking inspiration from nature and integrating civic elements to create a thriving hub for the local community.

A pedestrian corridor connects the Mesa Arts Center and Downtown Main Street towards the south with a string of cultural institutions to the north, animated with a number of additional civic facilities. Water features provide an aesthetically pleasing element to the design, whilst offering opportunities for pedestrians to cool down on hot days. These water elements take the form of three ‘Hydro Rooms’ which take inspiration from Mesa’s historic canals.

Woods Bagot & Surfacedesign have also incorporated a number of leisure spaces, including ‘The Hanger’ and ‘The Cloud’. The Hanger is an all-weather structure with earthen walls (partly sourced from soil and asphalt removed from the site) that can host a range of events and performances. The Cloud is designed as a vertical play space that is illuminated during the evening to create a ‘beacon’ for the city. Both elements will have sustainable properties as part of the site’s energy harvesting strategy.

Woods Bagot & Surfacedesign is competing against the following teams:

Colwell Shelor, West 8 & Weddle Gilmore

Otak & Mayer/Reed
