Cavernous Botanical Gardens & Research Centre 'replicates the drama of rain forests'
Chinese developer VANKE has commissioned UK-based architecture practice John McAslan + Partners to design an immense Botanical Gardens and Research Centre in Dongguan, Guangdong Province. John McAslan + Partners has now released images of the design which show a cavernous sunlit volume populated with tropical plans.
This vast glazed element wraps around the base of the building, providing a visual connection between inside and outside space whilst enabling natural light to reach the plants within. 20% of the ETFE skin roof is able to open to the elements, ensuring natural ventilation around the perimeter.
The brief presented to John McAslan + Partners expressly stated that rope bridges, rock faces, and intimate contact with waterfalls and plants were key requirements of the final design, all of which are clearly depicted in the images shown here. The team were also asked to replicate the physical and environmental drama of rain forests.
Of their latest scheme, John McAslan + Partners says: “The design is a contemporary re-interpretation of the essential characteristics of a tropical plant leaf structure, integrating architecture and landscape to provide a holistic approach for the site. The building is based around a gridshell roof structure which engages lightly with a landscaped mounded base mediating between the internal and external landscaping.”
