MVRDV reigns supreme in ratings for redesign of Serp & Molot factory territory

The finalist ratings for a 1.8 million sq m factory territory redevelopment in Moscow have been revealed. The competition was arranged by the Committee for Architecture and Urban Planning of Moscow for client JSC Don Stroy Invest and a select jury has ranked five shortlisted entries to advise the company’s selection of a definitive winner.

Dutch practice MVRDV was ranked first, followed by Ateliers Lion Associés (2nd), LDA Design (3rd), Project Meganom (4th) and de Architekten Cie (5th). This does not guarantee that MVRDV will be chosen as the final winner; it is simply a guide for JSC Don Stroy Invest.

The Serp & Molot development will renovate a factory territory near the historic centre of Moscow. This is a prime site for redevelopment however ecological rehabilitation of industrial polluted soil is integral to the project. At this point in time, the area is currently underdeveloped with low density buildings and a lack of recreational green spaces.

Schools and healthcare facilities are to be included in the plans alongside residential, retail and commercial developments. MVRDV’s concept looks to preserve the industrial integrity of the site, taking the factory streets, buildings and objects as starting points for modern interventions.

The leading team plans to replace some buildings with new volumes that follow the original footprints while preserving large chimneys and pipes and inserting green courtyards. MVRDV’s concept integrates public facilities and retail units at ground level and inserts a ‘three-dimensional spine’ in the form of a green park where the existing factory transport ring now stands.

JSC Don Stroy Invest estimates an investment of 180bn Roubles for the scheme with completion intended for 2021.
