Broadway Malyan and Ong & Ong partner in Singapore for National Heart Centre

A £175m National Heart Centre now stands completed in the centre of Singapore, its angular façade panels reflecting the ever-changing sky. Designed by Broadway Malyan with local consultancy Ong & Ong, the National Heart Centre is a 48,000 sq m facility devised with the principle of ‘putting the patient first’.

Singapore-based Director at Broadway Malyan, Ed Baker explains: “Our expert design team wanted to challenge people’s perceptions of healthcare and taking the patient experience as our starting point, working in close partnership with the Ministry of Health, we have incorporated the complex, specialist medical needs within an exciting and dramatic space.”

This ‘dramatic space’ can be accessed one of two ways: through a formal entranceway set within the institutional frontage; or via a more serene garden at the other end of the complex. This second access point serves as a healing park and waiting area which encapsulates the sense of openness that defines this glittering new healthcare facility.

Broadway Malyan and Ong & Ong have sought to maximise natural elements to boost the wellbeing of patients at the National Heart Centre and aid the healing process. As such, natural lighting is employed wherever possible, sky gardens have been incorporated, patients benefit from landscape views and a number of open green courtyards and foliage-rich spaces pepper the complex.

Intuitive wayfinding methods have been employed at the centre, with a high proportion of facilities visible from the main reception. Travel distances have been minimised and circulation routes made as efficient as possible.

Sustainable practices have also been incorporated into the finished building, such as a passive solar strategy within the formal frontage to reduce heat emissions and direct glare from the bright sunlight while diffusing the daylight for the comfort of building users. The materials selected for construction are energy efficient in fabrication and many are recycled or reusable.
