Kimball Art Center in Utah releases images of expansion by BIG and Elliot Work Group

Images of a major renovation and expansion scheme at the Kimball Art Center in Park City, Utah have been released to the public. Designed by Copenhagen/New York practice Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) with local practice Elliot Work Group, the design would double the current size of the art centre should it receive planning approval.

The non-profit institution provides educational exhibitions and events for the arts in its current venue but is in need of expansion to meet demand. As well as the BIG-designed extension scheme, the Kimball Art Center is considering the renting or purchasing a second campus to host education studios and programmes in order to increase the number of classes available.

BIG’s 15,000 sq ft concept would be privately funded and sited at the Center’s Main Street base. The design includes: 9,000+ sq ft of museum and exhibition space; generous social areas; expanded administrative spaces; a 4,000 sq ft Children’s Interactive Discovery Center; a 3,000 sq ft education studio; and expanded support areas.

“The building seems to rise with Main Street and the mountain landscape, while bowing down to match the scale of the existing Kimball. The upper gallery can spill out on to a vast roof deck atop the existing building, accommodating outdoor exhibitions and events within the backdrop of the Wasatch Mountains,” said Bjarke Ingels, founding partner of BIG.

“The new Kimball will be well equipped to become a major national contributor and catalyst for art, cinema, and education for generations to come.”
