Will Alsop and Michael Gold join forces once again for London residential scheme
After 30 years leading separate practices, Michael Gold and Will Alsop have come together once again to work on a residential scheme in London. Gold and Alsop ran a joint firm with John Lyall three decades ago.
Sited in Chelsea at Kings Road and Chelsea Manor Street, the property is yet to be submitted for planning however Gold, Alsop, AllDesign (as the partnership will be known) has shared early renderings of the project with WAN. Both Michael Gold and Will Alsop will continue to operate their separate firms alongside this development.
Initial details about the design are scarce due to the early nature of the project however current plans incorporate 3,994 sq m of residential space, 115 sq m of retail, a communal garden and underground parking for 40 vehicles.
Renderings show curved glass screens inserted at the front of the masonry façade to create individual room conservatories that look out over the street. A barrel roof is also clearly visible, its solar panels angled to catch the sunlight throughout the course of the day.
Of the newly-announced partnership Michael Gold explains: “We have long independently pursued certain similar interests including in active painting and illustration as interlinked with architectural work - Will, I believe, is currently exhibiting paintings in galleries around the world, a work of mine is about to be on show in the US at The Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum and the Museum of Art Rhode Island School of Design.
"We both design furniture and other freestanding interior objects with ‘figurative’ references; and we have both independently, to my surprise as discovered at our first meeting for 3 years, recently been working on facades featuring glass enclosed conservatories.”
