David Chipperfield Architects’ Museo Jumex in Mexico City to open 17 November

On Sunday 17 November David Chipperfield’s first Mexican project Museo Jumex will open its doors to the public in Mexico City with a plethora of contemporary artworks. Chipperfield worked in collaboration with local architects TAAU/Oscar Rodriguez on the commission which began construction in 2010.

Now complete, the building provides over 6,000 sq m of space for the private art collection of Mexico City-born Eugenio Lopez, a comprehensive assortment of pieces including Cy Twombly’s work which will be shown at Museo Jumex, the first time the artist's work will be on display in Latin America.

The building takes a prime site a stone’s throw from Museo Soumaya by Fernando Romero, another popular museum which takes an organic form, its silver façade glinting in the Mexican sunlight. Also nearby visitors will find the underground Teatro Cervantes by Madrid-based Ensamble Studio, a theatre whose angular roof structure projects above ground.

Chipperfield’s Museo Jumex sports a saw-tooth roof, marking its place on the city skyline with dramatic fashion. Finished in exposed white concrete and locally-sourced travertine, the bulk of the building sits on 14 columns, creating an open-air plaza for the public to enjoy.

Alongside flexible exhibition spaces, the new museum will provide areas for educational sessions and open discourse. These additional functions will include conferences, panel discussions, screenings and workshops in an effort to reach more people through interactive means.

Museo Jumex released a statement which reads: “With this exciting new project Fundacion/Coleccion Jumex hopes to become an important locus of culture and leisure for the general public as well as for those individuals interested in familiarising themselves with contemporary art through one of Latin America’s most important private collections.”
