WAN celebrates House of the Year Award winner with sponsors VOLA at showcase exhibition in London
This year’s WAN House of the Year Award was sponsored by VOLA, a Danish firm specialising in lavish bathroom fittings. To celebrate the exquisite shortlist submissions in the 2013 programme, VOLA hosted an exclusive showcase last week in their London showroom which was attended by over 250 architects, designers and product manufacturers.
The room was abuzz as people clustered around the six display boards highlighting the merits of each shortlisted residence and applause rang out when WAN’s Events Director, Tessa Schubert announced Tham & Videgård Arkitekter’s Swedish House Lagnö as the winner.
House Lagnö is set in the Stockholm archipelago. Designed by Tham & Videgård Arkitekter it elicited comments such as ‘stunning’, ‘absolutely beautiful’ and ‘very well thought out’ from this year's jury panel. WAN judge Aljosa Dekleva, Founding Partner of dekleva gregoric arhitekti went on: "It’s very smart especially with the roof space. Not only does it makes sense but it makes a statement. The form of the roofs are also informing the interior space."
Fellow juror Carl Turner, Founding Director of Carl Turner Architects thought that: "It has a very strong visual impact. It’s simple but sophisticated. It’s actually deceptively simple as it’s a very clever building." Director at McAdam Architects, Tanya Kalinina thought that: "The interpretation is immaculate. It’s just so smart."
Generally the judging panel regarded House Lagnö as ‘a complete piece of architecture which is also referenced well into its landscape’. The only regret expressed by the judges was that they hadn’t designed it themselves and it is for this reason, among others, that it was voted WAN House of the Year 2013.
Those who attended last week's event snacked on creative canapés by Salt Yard and toasted with bubbles while perusing the exhibition boards and generating new connections. VOLA also hosted a prize draw to win a luxury tap, the winner of which will be revealed shortly.
We were delighted to welcome Simon Gill, founder of Simon Gill Architects who were shortlisted for the WAN House of the Year Award with their Bulgarian Batak Fishing Lodge. Gill was on hand all evening to answer questions from interested attendees, curious to know the inspiration behind this inventive project. He was also presented with a certificate celebrating the practice’s shortlisting by WAN’s Editor in Chief, Michael Hammond.
Congratulations to Tham & Videgård Arkitekter on the success of their exceptional House Lagnö and many thanks to all who attended last week's event. We look forward to seeing you again soon!
