Benoy's 260-hectare Tanjung Aru Eco Development to grace Koto Kinabalu coast

International architecture and design studio Benoy have shared their latest major scheme with WAN - an expansive masterplan for a new beachfront development in Koto Kinbalu, Malaysia. The Tanjung Aru Eco Development is a 260 hectare scheme designed to regenerate the region and will be the firm’s first project in Sabah.

Announced by the Chief Minister of Sabah at the Malaysia Day Golden Jubilee celebrations earlier this month, the project has been conceptualised as a tourism destination and year-round residential development. It will blend public parks and tree-lined beaches with hotels, beach clubs, marinas, entertainment venues, recreational facilities and dining experiences.

Formerly known as Jesselton, Koto Kinabalu is a fishing community which is becoming ever more popular with international travellers. Taking its current name from the nearby Mount Kinabalu, the city is the capital of the state of Sabah and faces out onto the South China Sea.

Simon Blore, Global Managing Director at Benoy, commented: “Tanjung Aru Eco Development is a significant scheme for Benoy, not only as our maiden project in Sabah but also for the opportunity we have been given to shape and transform one of Malaysia’s favourite cities.

"Our aspiration behind the design has been to create a precinct that is unique in its quality and sense of place and that is imbued with a set of principles that will guide the future of this new district.”
