Evolution of Calgary skyline continues with SOM-designed 707 Fifth Street Tower
Skidmore, Owings & Merrill have designed an elliptical new office tower in the heart of downtown Calgary, it has emerged. The 27-storey tower was unveiled by Manulife Real Estate and will be managed by the Calgary office of Pivotal Projects. It is destined for completion in March 2017.
With floor-to-ceiling glass to enhance natural daylighting and provide views of the Rocky Mountains for commercial clients, 707 Fifth Street is targeting LEED Gold Certification across its 564,000 sq ft expanse.
Supporting the office units will be a fitness centre, landscaped winter garden, conference facilities and nearby links to Calgary’s +15 walkway network. A lead tenant for the building has already been found in Canadian oil company Brion Energy. President and CEO of Brion Energy Zhiming Li commented: “Brion Energy is excited to have a long-term solution to our office space requirements and a place to call home.
“As a growing company, we have been challenged to find a large block of vacant office space in Calgary’s core that meets our needs. Manulife's other properties are impressive and Brion can't wait to be in what we know will be a beautiful facility in the heart of Calgary.”
707 Fifth Street is the latest in a series of properties by high-profile architects in Calgary. In June Foster + Partners completed The Bow, a curved commercial tower which stands at 237m in height making it the tallest building in the city. A matter of weeks later, BIG and DIALOG revealed their concept for the new TELUS Sky building just meters from The Bow.
