Glamorous hotel and residential elements meet in new block near Guangzhou CBD
A 106,500 sq m hotel and serviced residence block has been completed near to the new Central Business District of Guangzhou. Conceptualised by Rocco Design Architects, W Guangzhou Hotel & Residences is a glossy new addition to this ever-growing city which has secured itself as one of the most prominent architectural cities in China over the past few years.
The building is split into two portions: a 317-room boutique hotel and 160 serviced apartments. Run by the same management, the two sections of the W Guangzhou Hotel & Residences are blended with the same overarching aesthetic but the public and private elements carefully distinguished through subtle design features.
The private residential portion, i.e. guest rooms and apartments, are clad in dark granite and glass, their scale subtly defined by a matrix of vertical glass fins, while the public portion, i.e. bar, restaurants and spa, are enclosed in transparent glazed boxes that visually spring out from the dark background to allow the hotel’s ambience to radiate into the surrounding neighbourhoods.
To ensure the most desirable living conditions for permanent residents, the apartment units are located in the taller section of the building, orientated towards the quieter south-eastern Xian Cun Road junction. In contrast, those looking for a short stay in the hotel rooms will find their units facing towards the Xian Cun Road / Jin Sui Road roundabout with a much livelier energy.
Rocco Design Architects further: “The two portions are architecturally unified into one monolithic block that presents a large-scale public image, defines the street edge and reinforces its linearity, but at the same time is punctuated in the centre with a large vertical ‘window’ that allows the inner landscaped park of the urban block to visually and spatially merge with the public street. This compositional gesture brings about an urban permeability that enhances the lighting and air flow pattern within the district.”
