Groundbreaking ceremony held for the next phase of the 2010 Shanghai Expo site

Three years ago Shanghai hosted one of the most extravagant expos in history. The 2010 Shanghai Expo at the former industrial dockyards secured the city’s position as one of the leaders in the architecture and design world as countries from all over the world went above and beyond to rise to the challenge of creating magnificent pavilions under the shadow of the formidable China Pavilion by He Jingtang.

Now the moment has come to breathe new life into the former Shanghai Expo site. On 30 May, schmidt hammer lassen architects, East China Architecture and Design Institute, and Shanghai Expo Construction Development Company gathered at the site to celebrate the groundbreaking of the long-awaited redevelopment project.

The 50,000 sq m development is sustainable on every level, from the overarching masterplan to the design of the individual buildings. This draws in line with the focus of the 2010 Shanghai Expo which promoted future sustainable development and the architects have stitched this ethic into their long-term plan. Open green spaces weave throughout the scheme, with soft landscaping, waterways and patches of green sculpting the former industrial expanse.

Kristian Lars Ahlmark, Partner at schmidt hammer lassen architects, explains: “The new Green Valley development, with offices, shops and restaurants, will become a new destination not only for the main users of the area but for people from Shanghai in general. It will be a green, sustainable landmark for the city and for the entire region. It is a great honour to be part of this development on such a prominent site.”

A mix of offices, retail units and social venues are planned for the scheme with green hanging gardens and cavernous atriums for maximum natural daylighting. Great window panes will afford wide-reaching views across the development and all of the modern office blocks will be flexible to the changing needs of clients while remaining environmentally-friendly and running under low operating costs.
