Towards 8 Billion; Housing the Next Generation

Following the success of our inaugural event in London last year, we are delighted to announce the launch of World Architecture Day 2013: New York. Taking place over 3 days, the event offers an exciting opportunity for our highly acclaimed and award-winning speakers to pitch ideas, present work and debate issues surrounding this year’s theme.

According to United Nations, the world’s population will have reached 8 billion by 2025 and we will be looking to the AEC industry to provide effective housing solutions for this growing figure. New York is tackling this by allocating 8 billion dollars to residential projects across the city, hence our theme, Towards 8 Billion; Housing the Next Generation.

Working in partnership with the American Institute of Architects: New York Chapter, we’ve put together a fascinating agenda exploring some of the most innovative housing solutions from around the world - from rebuilding the slums in Mumbai, through building on water in The Netherlands, worker housing in China and community-driven developments in Berlin, to social housing in France.

Monday 07 October sees the official celebration of World Architecture Day - held at the Center for Architecture - and forms the centrepiece around a compelling programme of events. Our summit kicks off on Sunday, where attendees will be given the opportunity to tour some of Manhattan’s most iconic architectural gems, followed by a VIP reception. Our last day, Tuesday will see ten workshops running in parallel. With a focus on the future of architecture and engineering, New York architects will be showcasing the latest developments and innovations in their studios, followed by a closing lunch in their locality.

World Architecture Day 2013: New York will feature familiar faces and rising stars from across the globe - including big-name architects, Richard Meier, Daniel Libeskind and Wolf de Prix, and such distinguished firms as Foster + Partners (invited), Snøhetta, Bjarke Ingels Group and Arup.

As with all WAN events, we aim to facilitate commercial opportunities, so throughout the summit we’ve built in a continuous series of pop-up networking events, themed to specific interests. We are already in discussion with a number of high-profile developers and building owners who will be participating in these breakout sessions.

We believe this programme offers an unparalleled diversity of activities designed to match the equally diverse interests of our delegates - whether an international visitor or a New York resident, seeking either inspiration or business growth.

We do hope you will be able to join us.
