80 hectare cultural and commercial scheme in Île-de-France won by BIG, Tess, Transsolar, Base, Transitec & Michel Forgue

A collaborative group comprising Tess, Transsolar, Base, Transitec, Michel Forgue and Bjarke Ingels Group has been awarded first place in a competition to design an exciting new city development between Paris and Roissy in Île-de-France. The 80 hectare development will be a cultural and commercial community based on the themes of the European urban experience, diversity and culture.

For Bjarke Ingels, Founding Partner of BIG, the EuropaCity development is an complex blend of urban and rural spaces: “EuropaCity will be an experimental hybrid between urbanism and landscape design: Center and periphery overlapped in the simultaneous coexistence of a recreational open landscape of rolling hills superimposed on an urban neighborhood of walkable streets, plazas and parks.

“We find that Paris these years is taking on a holistic effort to ensure that the urban periphery is given equal opportunity to be as lively and inhabitable as its historic center. EuropaCity will be an important step in this agenda.”

BIG’s design for the hybrid EuropaCity is highly sustainable throughout, actively encouraging residents to travel via pushbike or use the electric public transport system. Walking, both as a means of transportation and recreation will also be promoted by an expansive green roof which spans the 80 hectare development. The accessible roof peaks and troughs to allow stunning uninterrupted views across Paris.

Residents will also be able to engage in urban farming projects across EuropaCity which will be irrigated with recycled water from elsewhere in the community. Waste heat will also be recycled from the retail units and channelled into nearby leisure spas.

These measures are part of a design programme which outlines Europacity as ‘a laboratory for sustainable technologies and a showcase for viable green tech implementations that does not only save energy, but also improves the quality of the urban environment’. The entire facility is designed to be powered with a combination of solar, biofuel and geothermal energy.
