y.architects designs a villa retreat up amongst the foliage in tropical Malaysia

The owner of the newly completed ecotourist resort of batu batu requested a villa from y architects to built above the rocks amongst the back drop of the existing vegetation. It overlooks the South China Sea.

This island site was a Vietnamese refugee camp in the 1970's thus it has a lot of secondary forest growth from the clearing and inhabitation activities. Since then, it was a popular shooting location for the European reality show, Expedition Robinson. This villa is erected with minimal clearing of vegetation. Local villagers from the surrounding islands were pooled to carry out the construction.

The main construction material is plantation pine which is cut to size and tanalised before being transported to the island. The post and beam construction is walled with modular pine panelling and roofed with belian shingles. The roof is large and has a very deep overhang. The overhangs are propped up with timber struts.

Almost like an umbrella, it gives cover from monsoon rains and blistering afternoon sun. Designed with a reductive palette, the details are deliberately simple and practical for ease of construction. It has hot water provided by photovoltaic energy. Raised above the ground and nestled in between the trees, the villa is a perfect symbol of a traditional vernacular tropical building.
