Grimshaw releases video update on the construction of Pulkovo Airport in Russia

Grimshaw have recently unveiled a video update on the construction of Pulkovo Airport, St Petersburg (The video can be viewed through the vimeo link below). The architects were chosen for the project back in 2007 which looked for a design that would provide the home for international and domestic flights into and out of the capital.  The project is scheduled for completion in December 2012.

Pulkovo Airport was designated as the gateway to the rest of Russia in addition to St Petersburg, whilst also providing a reflection of the city itself in the design. The architects have taken various elements from the city and mimicked them in various aspects of the building. This includes the well-defined zones within the terminal, connected together by individual walkways which echos the composition of the city and its outskirts as islands connected by a series of bridges. The materiality of the guided gold light deflectors was referenced directly from the skyline of the city.

"Airports are designed around planes and not people; we wanted the gateway to St Petersburg to be different. The city inspired us from the guided roves of the churches of city which catch the low angle sun, to the angular geometry of soviet stars, to the elaborate rooms you get in the Hermitage Museum. We considered the airport as the first and last civic space of the city." Mark Middleton, Managing Partner - London, Grimshaw
