Lend Lease creates new HQ for Telstra
Telstra's global headquarters is on a 65,525m2 heritage-listed site in Melbourne with 43 office levels and retail amenities.
The challenge when refurbishing the 20 year-old building was to create a workplace showcasing the innovative products and services of Australia's leading telecommunications provider while also supporting the company's cultural transformation encouraging greater collaboration.
Office floors were refurbished according to Telstra Property's Accommodation standards - a leading benchmark for office design in the Australian property industry.
Using a standardised corporate identity, floor design and furniture selections. Every space was designed for a dual purpose - e.g. meeting rooms can serve as offices and training rooms; conference rooms can open up into social spaces; each floor has touchdown stations and quiet and active breakout spaces. Internal stairs promote inter-floor communication and employee wellbeing.
Clustering teams in well-planned hubs to meet the NLA ratio and encourage communication and movement around desks and central hubs. Collaboration zones are created through strategically placed kitchen and breakout areas with meeting rooms adjacent to them to provide a noise buffer. Collaboration tables are also centrally located in the workstation areas to encourage brainstorming and teamwork. The design is geared toward promoting Telstra's branding throughout to reinforce corporate strategic objectives and culture. Leading-edge technology promotes greater collaboration, including Telstra IP Telephony video phones, high-definition video conferencing and Cisco TelePresence rooms.
The modern ground floor was designed to create the atmosphere of a busy campus with a large central atrium void and views of employees walking through the nearby office floors. The foyer includes a new Telstra store, two new cafes, two 15-square metre high-definition media walls and a food court. The use of warm timber finishings and white alucobond to cover the existing dark grey marble creates a light, modern and welcoming entrance. The centrepiece is a new reception area with a suspended 3-D Telstra logo above reception and Australia's largest indoor vertical live garden behind it.
The Telstra Experience Centre on level one is a showcase technology centre that combines Telstra's networks with the latest products and services with 16 demonstration areas that showcase technologies in action, two user-testing laboratories and two product design areas. It also includes a heritage display demonstrating Australia's telecommunications history to reinforce just how far the company has evolved.
