Bright and New Office and Retail Space in a Historical Setting

With dexterity and courage of both developer, contractor and architect, this city palace again brightens the neighborhood. The palace was originally designed by Kasper Salin in 1888 and is located in the historical center of Stockholm. The work of Kasper Salin is highly appreciated and is still considered of great significance. A combined wish to restore the existing building to its former splendor and to make full use of development rights, led to a two-storey rooftop addition. The addition was to be contemporary and distinct, without overwhelming the existing. The exterior had over the years dulled by pollution and suffered some modifications. In close collaboration with the city and heritage expertise, the building now stands vibrant in gold ochre and brick red, with bright rusticated detailing, and elaborate metal work of the balconies. The context was extensively studied in relation to the design of the rooftop addition. The grammar of the 19th century was applied to the addition, using modern methods and materials. Horizontal solar panels mirror the rusticated masonry. The structure continues the rhythm of the brick fa§ade while allowing for open space interiors and an unbroken view across the rooftops. Modern office and retail space of high quality and aesthetics can now be found throughout the building. Original ornamentation of ceilings, window fittings, and doors exquisitely contrast modern glass partitions. The new installation systems allow for both open office settings and that of individual offices. When work started on street level, previously hidden Art Nouveau glass partitions were uncovered. Now restored, additional bright and airy retail space vitalizes the street. Attention to the choice of building materials and techniques has awarded the project environmental certifications, such as Sunda Hus and Green Building. This is now a sought after location for retail. The Vildmannen city palace has, yet again, a bright future.
