Perkins Eastman's WSMMTC gets the go ahead for its next stage of construction

EE&K, a Perkins Eastman company joins VIA Metropolitan Transit (VIA) in celebrating the next phase of the Westside Multimodal Transit Centre (WSMMTC) project in San Antonio, TX. Strategically located in the Cattleman Square Historic District, the WSMMTC is adjacent to the historic International and Greater Northern (I&GN) railway station.

As a critical component of VIA's citywide vision to improve transit services in downtown San Antonio, the WSMMTC is poised to become a vibrant transit centre, integrated with development that revitalises the Westside District and helps to define a new downtown neighbourhood. The initial phase of the WSMMTC is currently under construction and estimated completion is anticipated for late 2012.

Primo, VIA's flagship bus rapid transit service, and the reuse of the historic I&GN station building for transit purposes are among the main components of Phase I. Last month the project received the required federal environmental clearances to proceed into final design and construction. The 2.1-acre site for Phase 2 is located northeast of the historic I&GN station and incorporates the construction of a new transit plaza.

The design of the new transit plaza focuses on creating a new high-quality public place for the City of San Antonio that provides a transit-friendly environment for passengers. The central place-making challenge faced by the designers is to harness the convenience of transit in order to create a new public square that not only enhances the image of transit in San Antonio, but also encourage private investment to revitalize the Westside District.

The larger vision is expected to be implemented in phases, planned to not preclude a full range of future transit initiatives. "This is a state-of-the-art effort to integrate transportation and land use planning. VIA's transit vision is creating the City's ‘next great place,' a sure way to attract more transit riders," said Stanton Eckstut FAIA, Principal at EE&K a Perkins Eastman company.
