The new student reception and residence at the University of Surrey opens, designed by Scott Brownrigg

Scott Brownrigg has announced the completion of a new 2,430sq m student reception and residence which he designed for the University of Surrey. The three-storey building provides a striking entrance to the University’s Manor Park campus, and consists of 42 en-suite bedrooms equipped with kitchenette and bathroom facilities. The large, diamond-shaped building also supplies a full service kitchen, café lounge, bar area and student meeting areas.

The building also features a curved sweep of rippled zinc cladding which wraps around the feature staircase and links to the angled canopy beyond it. This canopy, above the reception and café lounge space, appears to be structure-less and weightless, without any visible columns. It folds down on the south-western elevation in order to shield the café from overly-bright sunshine. The café lounge has a fully glazed and recessed elevation, with sliding doors which open out onto the terrace for summer use.

The interiors provide a continuous yet structured space, connecting the reception and the entrance with its fixed furniture installations, which act as divisions so as to separate the different areas. Above the zinc café lounge, a traditional elevation technique has been applied to the rooms on the first and second floors. In order to create synonymy with the structure’s neighbouring buildings, the dark anodised aluminium windows are combined with blue black engineering brick panels within a red brick elevation. A sinking dark mortar joint gives the reception building a modern edge.

Professor Steven Baker, the Development Director at the University of Surrey said, “The University is absolutely delighted with this superb new building, and appreciates the very high standard of the design and the finished quality”.

Winner of AJ 100 Regional Award- Wales 2012 and 2011, Scott Brownrigg received planning permission back in November 2011 to construct the University building project, which was announced as completed on Monday 13th August 2012.
