Five compete to design arts pavilion on New York's Governor's Island
FIGMENT, the annual arts event on Governor's Island, the Emerging New York Architects Committee (ENYA) of AIANY, and the Structural Engineers Association of New York (SEAofNY) have announced the finalists for the third annual 2012-2013 City of Dreams Pavilion Design Competition. The pavilion will serve as the centerpiece of arts and social activity on Governor's Island for the 2013 summer season, providing both a gathering place and performance space.
The short listed teams and their concepts are: A cloud, in a Tree by SAMPLES (Julien Boitard and Richard Nguyen); The Enneper Pavilion by Maria Mingallon; For Rent by MTWTHFSS (Ed Blumer and Pete Storey); Fodder Form Pavilion by HuycKurlandDowling (Teddy Huyck, Alexis Kurland, and Conner Dowling); and Head in the Clouds by Jason Klimoski and Lesley Change. The finalists will next refine their designs and present to a jury, which will select a winner by September 30, 2012.
The jury for the competition is Vicki Arbitrio, PE, Associate Partner, Gilsanz Murray Steficek; Kai Uwe-Bergmann, AIA, LEED AP, RIBA, MAA, Partner, BIG Bjarke Ingels Group; Marc Clemenceau Bailly, AIA, Partner, Gage / Clemenceau Architects; Marc Kushner, AIA, Co-founder, HWKN Architects; Michael Loverich, Partner, Bittertang, 2011 City of Dreams Pavilion designer; and Kristen Richards, Hon. AIA, Hon. ASLA, Editor-in-Chief, Oculus, ArchNewsNow. Ada Tolla, Int'l Assoc. AIA, partner at LOT-EK is acting as Pavilion Mentor for the competition. She will work with each finalist team as they prepare their final submissions.
