Major new hospital for Shanghai by RTKL
Shanghai Changzheng Pudong Hospital responds to the client's desire for a distinctive hospital that provides a world-class healthcare experience to serve its growing urban population.
Traditional Chinese medicine primarily emphasises balance through the concept of 'yin and yang'. This concept describes how opposites are interconnected and interdependent in the natural world. This guideline becomes the key design principle for the Shanghai Changzheng Pudong Hospital: energetic opposing forces emphasising the distinctiveness of the hospital's functional parts and complementary opposites that ultimately influence the greater whole.
The new hospital, featuring more than 408,000 sq m and 2,200 beds, provides a sense of permanence and place by incorporating Chinese culture andengagespatients on their healing journeys. The program consists of a diagnostic and treatment pavilion, an emergency centre, an infectious disease center, four inpatient bed towers (one being VIP), integrated research and teaching facilities, dormitories an administration building and a hotel.
The hospital is based on a modular design which incorporates sustainability, separation of flows and standardisation. Additionally, the design improves the quality of life of its patients and community by providing advanced wellness education, diagnosis and treatment. The architecture is unique, distinctive and inspirational, creating a collection of buildings that is grounded in nature to enrich the human experience. The incorporation of nature in an urban setting connects the buildings, activities and experiences.
The composition of buildings radiate around a central oval diagnostic and treatment pavilion. Similar to a solar system, it becomes the organising element of the campus adding dynamism to its geometry as it plays into the yin and yang symbolism for all patients. The integration of natural landscapes and pathways in and around the diagnostic and treatment pavilion becomes aunifying design element throughout the programand also enables way-finding and provides community space.
