Performance artist Marina Abramovic and OMA unveil plans for New York Arts Centre

Today, inside the performance dome at MoMA PS1, representatives of the Marina Abramovic Institute (MAI) and OMA unveiled plans for a $15m arts centre in upstate New York devoted to duration-based art lasting from six hours to several days.

On hand for the project unveiling was MoMA’s Klaus Bisenbach, Marina Abarmovic Institute Director Serge Le Borgne, Milan City Councilor Stefano Boeri, and OMA Partner and Director of the New York office Shoehei Shigematsu. The project brings together Abramovic’s 40 years of pioneering work in the genre with OMA’s innovation in theatre and museum design.

The project involves the transformation of a former tennis centre in Hudson, New York, which is located two hours north of Manhattan, to accommodate the research and production of performance art. Abramovic plans to use the space as a ‘laboratory for exploring time-based and immaterial art- including performances, dance, theatre, film, videos, opera, and music- through collaborations with practitioners in the realms of science, technology and education’. She also plans to train audiences in the Ambrovic method, which prepares visitors, mentally and physically in the art of experiencing long durational work.

Led by OMA Principals Shoehei Shigematsu and Rem Koolhaas, the project will be designed locally out of OMA’s New York office. In addition to designing the space, OMA will design new types of furniture, lighting, and other elements to facilitate the viewing of such works. Construction is expected to begin at the end of next year with the opening projected for 2014.
