Perkins+Will designs new bed tower, refocusing patient attention towards nature, sunlight and loving family
The Miami Children’s Hospital new Critical Care Bed Tower elevates one of the region’s leading children’s hospitals to a national platform for pediatric care. Situated in a dense hospital campus, the new urgent care tower refocuses patient attention towards nature, sunlight and loving family. The bed tower creates an environment where patients comes first; becoming a symbol of community outreach to the city beyond.
The principles of evidence-based design establish the design context. The sense of control and social support for the child exists in their ready access to family; the patient room is zoned with the most generous possible space for the family. Access to nature is insured with large glazed openings to outdoor Healing Gardens beyond; framed behind the loving gaze of the family so that layers of compassion meet the patient from every angle.
Positive distractions are accessible to both the recovering patient and the family; from Wonder Rooms where every surface and object provides for interactive play and Family Rooms adjacent to the healing gardens where families can refresh their body and spirit. Wayfinding is made poetically simple through a soaring art-filled multi-height lobby space spanning all levels of the building. The structure meets the campus at ground level with columns landing in a sweeping outdoor reflecting pond that stretches north-south to provide passive cooling and sensory enhancement at these informal outdoor family gathering spaces.
The design includes plenty of curtain wall allowing for natural lighting for patient rooms. A unique laminated translucent interlayer pattern of the glazing provides opportunity to modulate privacy, visibility, and glare, to enhance the healing attributes of the space. The pattern doubles as a unique artistic image of differently scaled children holding hands reflecting the clients brand.
