Archer Architects llp design boutique hotel in London's hip East End

The brief was for a 26 room boutique hotel and day spa facilities for the Shoreditch House Members Club, part of the Soho House Group.

Soho House is well known for its strong brand identity which is manifest through the idiosyncratic styling of each of the individual ‘houses'. The task presented by the brief was to develop an architectural solution which would strengthen the identity of the club and accommodate the established language of understated comfort within the interiors. This is expressed by a strong palette of un-adorned materials, brick, concrete and steel. The external form of the building could afford to be strongly abstract and is complimented by the materiality of the Corten Steel finish, which was placed on the building in its raw state and allowed to weather in-situ. In this way the building grew into its location and its final colour was as a direct result of the surrounding environment.

The design solution can be read as a box within a box whereby a new, contemporary, structure rises from behind the façade of the old structure. The form is reminiscent of a piece of discarded equipment. The tonal qualities of the Corten steel sits in harmony with the historic brickwork of the adjacent buildings and the new composition completes an empty corner of the urban block. The building provides a strong visual marker to visitors entering the district and so the architecture thus strives to surpass the immediate constraints of the brief and contribute to the wider urban setting.

The new hotel sits next to the existing entrance to the club with the day-spa is situated on the ground floor and basement immediately adjacent to the reception. The hotel rooms are located directly above.
