Stanley Beaman & Sears integrates sophisticated design and nature for new children's hospital
The name 'Nemours' has its origins in the Celtic word 'nemora'; a sanctuary of trees inhabited by the god of healing springs. In an architectural language as powerful and timeless as its name suggests, the Nemours Children's Hospital transforms the physical landscape of central Florida and creates spaces capable of transforming the inner landscape of a child as they experience the potentially difficult and frightening journey to recovery and beyond.
Stanley Beaman & Sears and associate architect Perkins+Will integrated outpatient and inpatient care into a single facility, ensuring that a child's care team is consistent from routine clinic visits to inpatient treatment. This creates a patient-centric experience where staff can deliver the highest quality care, encouraging families to build relationships with caregivers and neighbours to sustain them during health challenges. The combining of these two programs into a single facility involves the detailed coordination of related programmatic services, security, independent building systems to maintain proper air flow, as well as overall design.
Nemours Children's Hospital showcases new technology, state of the art equipment, innovative building materials, lighting and interactive features. Exterior finishes include terrazzo embedded with acrylic light channels that refract light, interacting with diurnal cycles and the movements of the surrounding environment. Folded ceiling panels resemble filtered light patterns of tree canopies. Interior spaces strategically harvest daylight. Floor to ceiling windows provide patients with garden views and contribute to the ever-changing mosaic of the building's façade.
Garden water features create a captivating atmosphere of sound, shape, aroma and movement. The design of this sophisticated evidence-based facility and surrounding grounds will allow children and adults alike to rediscover the timeless wonders of nature that continue to stimulate the senses and inspire holistic healing. Scheduled to finish construction in Fall 2012, Nemours Children's Hospital is on track for LEED Gold certification.
