Charles Bancroft releases the long-awaited film trailer for his debut novel The Architect

Last night, London’s Groucho Club was privy to the premiere of a gripping trailer for the next big book-turned-film: Charles Bancroft’s The Architect. The crème de la crème of the capital’s design profession gathered to watch the first ever showing of the two minute trailer, starring Simon James Morgan as the incomparable Rob Gilbert, Nessa Wrafter as the captivating Angelika and commanding Suan-Li Ong took the part of Mei-Lei. Morgan and Wrafter even treated the cluster of architects and designers to a live performance from Bancroft’s next text, Deadline.

The author himself was not in attendance but WAN stepped into the void, providing free copies of the celebrated volume The Architect and Bancroft’s follow-up novel, Masterplan for any who wished to liven up their train journeys home. After the short clip, one passionate Creative Director confessed that even if she wasn’t in the industry, she’d be first in line for the film.

For those of you not in the know, The Architect follows the story of loveable rogue Rob Gilbert, a London architect whose landmark project has literally crumbled, claiming the lives of three people. Tied up with a number of shady Russians, powerful figures in China and an increasingly lacklustre marriage, Gilbert’s reputation is suddenly thrown into question.

Bancroft explains: “The Architect was born out of 25 years toil in the construction industry. During that time I observed architects from many perspectives; as friends, as clients but also as a son. My father was an architect for the British Government and my early years were spent amongst strange smelling linen drawings, fragile wooden models and dangerous building sites. I believe those years gave me a sound foundation on which to build my central character Rob Gilbert.”
